Free TrialCan I Buy You A Cup of Coffee?

In my role as “Lead Geek” here at AppAssure, a big part of my job is what we’ll call advocacy – that is, representing the opinions and desires of the IT professional audience as a whole inside the company. Having been an IT Pro myself for many years, I feel relatively plugged in to the community, and fortunately, my job gives me the opportunity to talk with so many of you regularly on Twitter, Facebook, in community
forums, and through e-mails like this one. But it’s rare that I have the chance to talk with many of you face-to-face.

Well, now we have that chance. I’ll be attending the Connections conference in just a few weeks (November 9-12, 2009) in Las Vegas. If any of you plan to be there, drop me a line at leadgeek@appassure.com (or via Twitter at @appassure). I’d love the opportunity to meet up with as many of you as possible, buy you a cup of coffee, and just get a better feel for the projects you’re working on, the greatest challenges you’re facing, and so on. Hope to see you there!

How to Avoid Cloud Computing Failure

With the current shift to cloud computing, companies have a great opportunity to improve network flexibility, scalability and computing power for less money. If they correctly plan, employ and manage cloud computing applications and services, companies can also manage their networks at a much lower maintenance level.

Does Fragmentation Hurt Storage Network Performance?

Is fragmentation a big issue affecting storage area network (SAN) performance? Some say no, while others say yes, but what’s interesting is that both sides argue their point emphatically. So what’s the deal with SAN fragmentation?

Data Center Design 101

Companies are building new data centers to save money on power and better utilize their computing power. Sure, cloud computing is a factor, but a small one for enterprises at this juncture. People are building data centers in a big way.

Backup vs. archiving

The key difference between data backup and data archiving is that backups are designed for the rapid recovery of operational data, while an archive stores data that’s no longer in day-to-day use but must still be retained.

Should everything be virtualized?

Should everything, that is all servers, storage and I/O along with facilities, be virtualized? The answer – not surprisingly – should be “it depends!”

Finally this week, a little bit of self-promotion. Those among you who are particularly savvy in the world of social media may have heard that the Open Web Awards – administered by the social media experts at Mashable – are now open for nominations. Should you be so
inclined, feel free to head over and nominate @appassure! We know – all the categories are tempting. But if you need to choose just one, might we suggest “Best Brand Use of Twitter”?
While you’re there, you might also vote for Funniest Person to Follow on Twitter, Flickr Photo of the Year, and so on. That is all.

Have a great week,

-Josh
