AppAssure Software Announces the Availability of Replay 4, Enabling Cloud-based Application Recovery to Protect Mission-Critical Data On and Off-site
Replay 4 reduces the cost of disaster recovery by up to 80% with cutting edge data deduplication and replication for both virtual and physical environments; creates complete off-site virtual data centers
RESTON, VA. – September 9, 2009 – Advanced disaster recovery functionality, including cloud-based application recovery, has been traditionally been out of reach for small-to-medium businesses. That ends today with the release of Replay 4, a next generation backup and recovery platform from AppAssure Software that any company can afford. Providing far more than just data recovery, Replay 4 adheres to the principles of “Backup 2.0” and features robust, cloud-based application recovery. With its award-winning and patent pending continuous application protection technology, this solution provides administrators the ability to back up to the cloud, automatically test restores, and recover from any disaster – whether just one missing file or an entire infrastructure – in minutes, all while saving significantly on storage costs.
“With Replay, we dropped our storage requirements by 74% while expanding our ability to recovery to any point in time,” said Greg Thomas from County of Jackson, West Virginia. “Before Replay, we were doing one full backup a day and we’d keep a rolling 21 days on hand. Now we have continuous data protection with 90 days of backups on hand, dozens of daily snapshots all of which we can recover from, and we’re using just a quarter of the storage space our previous solution used.”
Replay is the only solution that delivers rapid local and cloud based recoveries, which provides companies with protection from both isolated hardware and application failures, as well as entire site-wide failures. Previous solutions to this problem required expensive storage hardware, complicated replication software, and many layers of redundancy.
Simply put, Replay 4 is the world’s fastest way to recover from a server disruption; and the only disaster recovery solution with application-level recall for high-pressure recovery scenarios. The newest release of Replay enables AppAssure customers to:
- Reduce hardware and storage costs with cloud-based backup by leveraging virtualization and deduplication across a Wide-Area Network.
- Implement a fault tolerant datacenter in the cloud for less than 10% of the cost and footprint of traditional hardware-based solutions.
- Provide IT administrative cost savings with ability to recover 8 times faster than traditional solutions and with an enterprise console for centrally managing local and remote offices.
Replay 4 also adds support for additional platforms including Hyper-V R2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and VMware ESX 4. In addition to replication and increased platform support for the current products in the Replay line-up – Replay for Exchange, Replay for Windows Servers (formerly Replay AppImage), and Replay for SQL – AppAssure has added four, all new products to the suite: Replay for Small Business Servers, Replay for Hyper-V, Replay for Windows Desktops and Replay Replication.
AppAssure offers subscription and perpetual licensing alternatives, unlimited mailbox protection and single message restores with each Replay for Exchange License, and three totally free tools to make it easier for IT administrator to do their jobs. These tools are:
- For Exchange Admins: free single message recovery for Exchange with MailRetriever Lite
- For SharePoint Admins: free document recovery for Sharepoint with DocRetriever
- For Hyper-V Admins: the first tool in our Hyper-V Toolset, VHD Mount ShellExtension
“AppAssure understands that for small-to-medium sized businesses to be prepared to recover from any sized outage of mission-critical servers quickly, they must not only automate daily backup tasks but have enterprise-class tools to support off-site, physical, or virtual hot standby options,” said Najaf Husain, AppAssure’s CEO. “The new features available in this latest release do just that by making it easier for our customers to get into the cloud with an affordable DR plan, and to make the process of deploying backups more cost effective by varying levels of protection on an application-by-application basis.”
Replay 4 and our free tools are immediately available directly from AppAssure.

Chapter 12: Tales from the Trenches: My Life with Backup 2.0
In the second chapter of this book, I shared with you some of the horror stories of Backup 1.0. I did so primarily as a way of highlighting how poorly our traditional backup techniques really meet our business needs. In this chapter, I want to do the opposite: share with you some stories of Backup 2.0, both from my own experience and from stories you readers have shared over the year‐long production of this book. Names have been changed to protect the innocent, of course, but I think you’ll find these to be compelling examples of how Backup 2.0 has been applied. Where possible, I’ll share information about the infrastructure that goes with these stories so that you can see some of the creative and innovative ways Backup 2.0 is being used in organizations like your own.
