California-based Whalen Furniture manufactures and distributes furniture to retailers across the US and in Mexico and China. It's an endeavor that requires crucial business systems - Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server, the Whalen website, warehouse management systems - and their associated data to be constantly accessible. Protecting data and keeping systems up and running falls to Ivan Breit, Systems Administrator. Tape backups were protecting data but Breit knew that if he ever needed to restore data, he'd have to do it "in minutes not hours or days." The Hitchcock Independent School District in Hitchcock, Texas serves 1,200 students in grades K - 12 through 4 schools with a new elementary school on the way. The IT group at Hitchcock, led by Chris Armacost, Director of Technology, is responsible for all the end-user devices, network equipment, and servers that support students, teachers, administrators, and the district's Head Start and other special education programs. Central to their mission is protecting student (e.g. grades, reports, plans), business, and course application data that resides on SQL servers. Canton Township is home to 85,000 people in southeastern Michigan. A large suburb of Detroit, Canton employs about 600 people in police, fire department and administrative positions. The majority of those employees rely on email for communication with one another, residents, elected officials and many other people who use and impact the services they provide.
