Rethinking Virtual Server Backups
We’re pleased to announce the availability of the next chapter in our free e-book, The Definitive Guide to Windows Application and Server Backup 2.0, by Don Jones (www.appassure.com/resources/free-ebooks/). Chapter 7 takes us through rethinking virtual server backups (go.appassure.com/eBookChapter7Download.html).
As virtualization continues to play an ever-increasing role in our data centers, the importance of building a backup [...]
Last week, we were privileged to host a free webinar entitled Virtual Backups: Many Perspectives, Painful Management, Duplication of Work … Or, NOT? Joining us in this exciting session for a discussion of the challenges – and opportunities – presented by the continual increase in virtualization technology were Greg Shields, Microsoft MVP and VMware [...]
You may have heard about the webinars we’ve conducted over the past few weeks. We hope you can join us for our next session on Thursday, April 1st when we’ll be hosting Virtual Backups: Many Perspectives, Painful Management, Duplication of Work … Or, NOT?. Joining us for the discussion with be Microsoft MVP Greg [...]
The stunning growth of virtualization is no big secret. And the reasons aren’t hard to come by either – server consolidation, centralized management, energy savings, and more. But until fairly recently, there seemed to be a misconception that virtualization was a platform exclusive to the enterprise. You and I know better.
In a recent article in [...]
As advertised, we held a free webinar this past week entitled Understanding the ROI of Backup 2.0: Building a Business Case. While we had a great crowd joining us, we know that some of you weren’t able to attend, so we’ve made a recording of the session available online for you to view at your [...]
Rethinking SharePoint Server Backups
We’re pleased to announce that the next installment of our free e-book, The Definitive Guide to Windows Application and Server Backup 2.0, is now available. Chapter 6 tackles what could arguably be the most difficult topic in the Backup 2.0 discussion: Rethinking SharePoint Server Backups.
More and more, our critical business data – documents, spreadsheets, process [...]
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been asking you to share your backup and recovery stories – both the good, and the bad. As promised, we’d like to start sharing some of those stories with you, in the hopes that others might benefit from the experience of our Backup Heroes.
For example, after being forced to [...]
Not long ago, I told you about the release of our new Backup 2.0 ROI Toolkit, with tools and information designed to help you make a business case for Backup 2.0 in your organization. Well, we’re taking that discussion to the next step with a complimentary webinar entitled Understanding the ROI of Backup 2.0: Building [...]

Share Your Backup and Recovery Stories
Among the strongest educational resources we have is one another. There’s invaluable benefit to be found in the experiences we share as professionals. Who’s had the best success with which product? What are the gotchas I should know about that might not jump off the page in the documentation? Who has horror stories to share of weekends at work during an outage? Of flooded data centers? Or even worse – data lost forever?
Calculating Your Backup and Recovery ROI
One of my key mandates as Lead Geek here at AppAssure is to make certain that you – as IT professionals – have all of the tools possible to help make you successful. And sure, we’ve got tools like DocRetriever Lite, MailRetriever Lite, Exchange Observer, and the Hyper-V Toolset that do just that.
But as we’ve [...]

This week is always tough. For so many of us who were lucky enough to grab some time off over the past few weeks, getting back into the groove can be a monumental challenge. Your e-mail is proverbially piled up; the calendar is packed with non-stop meetings. What can you do, though, except push through, [...]
I always love reading those “best of” lists that start to appear at the end of a year. I’m generally a nostalgic sort of person, so it’s always interesting to me to look back and remember major milestones and events before heading into a new year. This year brings an extra edge though, as it’s [...]
As 2009 comes to a close, it’s natural to look back at what the last year has brought us. Needless to say, it has been a difficult one for many of us, battling an economy that just won’t cooperate and just trying to stay afloat. However, through the good times and the bad, the wheel [...]
Solid State is Coming
I’m more convinced of this than ever. News headlines are increasing, prices are decreasing, and solid state drives will be mainstream before you know it. Heck, we’re even giving one away for our December contest! So what
does this mean for you?
Well, prices for solid state drives are still higher than [...]
Congratulations to our Winner!
As we’ve been mentioning over the past several weeks, we’ve been running a contest throughout November – every download of an AppAssure trial or utility entered you into our drawing for a free 2 TB NAS device! Well, we’re pleased to announce that Dave B. from Pennsylvania has won our drawing for the month of [...]
Protecting a Virtual Environment
The introduction and rapid, mainstream adoption of virtualization has had an amazing impact an IT department’s ability to consolidate systems, save money and save time.
But the concept of virtual disaster recovery is something that requires more attention than it has received.
Moving our core IT infrastructure into virtual machines has an impact on how we protect [...]
We were fortunate enough to be able to spend last week at the Windows Connections conference in Las Vegas. One of the greatest advantages of conferences like that is the ability to interact with so many experts in one place: we heard directory services expert Sean Deuby speak about Active Directory protection and recovery; Michael [...]
And They’re Off!
Last week, we introduced our November download sweepstakes, and to be honest, we’re humbled by the response. IT Pros are downloading free trials and utilities from AppAssure in astounding numbers, and the competition is on! So don’t forget – for every trial and utility you download, you’ll be entered into a drawing for [...]

Can I Buy You A Cup of Coffee?
In my role as “Lead Geek” here at AppAssure, a big part of my job is what we’ll call advocacy – that is, representing the opinions and desires of the IT professional audience as a whole inside the company. Having been an IT Pro myself for many years, [...]
By now many of you have surely read about the T-Mobile/Danger disaster recovery incident. In short, T-Mobile, and their data partner Danger (a Microsoft subsidiary), were undertaking an upgrade of their storage infrastructure. And as sometimes happens, things didn’t go as planned, and the companies experienced some dramatic data loss (including all of the personal data stored on their customers’ Sidekick mobile devices.) It appears that by now, Danger has recovered “a majority” of the data, but not until after days of seeming like all was lost.
What is “Cloud Storage” Anyway?
We’ve talked here before about the ubiquity – and arguably the overuse – of the term “cloud” as it applies to, well, pretty much everything. But when it comes to cloud storage, the distinction is pretty important. As Chuck Hollis – VP of Global Marketing and CTO at EMC – points out, cloud storage is more than just a big pile of disk. Mr. Hollis outlines three key ways in which cloud storage is more than just a collection of disk space: clouds are built differently, clouds are
operated differently, and clouds are consumed differently than traditional IT.
Generally speaking, evolution is a painstakingly slow process. One generally doesn’t observe it taking place in real time. You normally need to zoom out and observe the same thing over a long period of time in order to notice how it has changed.
Let’s face it, getting attention (time, money, people) for disaster recovery planning and infrastructure has always been hard. All too often, it’s an issue addressed after a disaster strikes, when an organization is reeling from not having planned ahead of time in the first place.
Product is Pointless without Planning
The notion is simple: you can have the best disaster recovery software in the world (even AppAssure Backup & Replication!), but if you’re just going to wing it when disaster strikes, you’re just asking for trouble.
Letter from the Leed Geek @ AppAssure
We’re very excited about the new features and benefits delivered as part of AppAssure Backup & Replication: reducing hardware footprints, lowering storage costs, enabling cloud-based application recovery, and much more.
Nevertheless, the world keeps turning and we do have other news to share with you this week.
Moving into the Cloud
We’ve talked much recently about the evolution of cloud computing – the role it will play, and the impact it will have on how we access our information and conduct our business. Fortunately, we have experts to guide us through the maze, pointing out the potholes – or canyons – along the [...]
Keeping up with the Treadmill
One of the greatest challenges an IT Pro faces is keeping up with the treadmill – that is, staying up-to-date on all the latest technology and techniques, so they can continue to do their job. Information technology practically reinvents itself every 18 months, and it can often feel like one’s skills [...]
Living in a Virtual World
It wouldn’t be a far stretch to argue that entrance into the mainstream of virtualization technology is one of the most significant and positive changes to Information Technology in decades. The result is a magnification of computing power – not to mention an increase in performance and cost efficiency – that [...]
Where Do You Keep Your Data?
Everywhere we turned this week, there was news about new storage options. Two terabyte traditional drives are entering the mix, one terabyte solid state drives are on their way, and Intel is having some trouble with their new offerings. Of course, for every story about new storage products, there are [...]
Are Your Files Safe in the Cloud?
From the Editor
For me, the big news this week was something that didn’t get many major headlines, but probably should have: the release of a recent congressional report detailing the discovery of classified government files on public peer-to-peer file sharing systems.
Documents including Secret Service safehouse locations, military rosters, and IRS tax returns have all been [...]
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
From The Editor
Without a doubt, the big news this past week was the release to manufacturing of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. While broad availability is still a few weeks away, this marks a major milestone in Microsoft’s effort to rehab its OS reputation. Many IT shops held off on deploying Windows Vista, [...]
From The Editor
You may have seen in the news this week that back in May, Twitter suffered a security breach that allowed an attacker to gain access to various (and confidential) internal e-mails, documents and spreadsheets relevant to Twitter’s business. It became news this week when the blog TechCrunch received copies of the confidential files, [...]
From the Editor
In any given week, it’s easy to find big technology news in every sector, pouring in from around the globe. But without a doubt, the big news this week is the announcement from Google of the Chrome OS. In a clear shot across Microsoft’s bow, Google is leveraging its investment in its Chrome [...]
As I mentioned on our blog last week, it’s always really exciting for us when we’re able to celebrate the success of our customers (which, fortunately for us, is pretty often!) Even if you believe that companies exist solely to make money (which is often the case), a company without happy customers won’t have customers [...]
What Can You Do in 60 Seconds?
What resource is more valuable than time? We certainly know it’s finite and irreplaceable. It’s also priceless; all the money in the world can’t buy you more. And how we spend our time determines so much about what we’re able to accomplish throughout our lives. Deep thoughts for the day, huh?
Perhaps, but recognizing the value [...]
