Stories of Backup Heroes
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been asking you to share your backup and recovery stories – both the good, and the bad. As promised, we’d like to start sharing some of those stories with you, in the hopes that others might benefit from the experience of our Backup Heroes.
For example, after being forced to pack all its servers into a pickup truck heading for higher ground due to a 500-year flood in North Dakota, Valley City State University decided to implement a more effective disaster recovery solution.
Then comes the story of Lincoln Electric System, which provides for all of the power needs for the residents and businesses of Lincoln, Nebraska. Clearly, downtime is just not an option.
And at Southeastern Urological Center in Tallahassee, FL, Barry Jalbert is a key player in making sure the healthcare systems that support their doctors and patients are healthy themselves. Because if there’s a server failure at SEUC, all medical procedures come to a halt.
These are just a sampling of the amazing stories we’ve received so far. Please continue to share your experiences by e-mailing us your story today!

More Muscle for HDDs
Solid-state disks (SSDs) may have much of the momentum going into the next enterprise refresh cycle, but a series of developments on the hard disk side indicates that organizations with continue with mixed environments for some time.
Can Cloud Computing Replace Your Storage Network?
Cloud computing and cloud data storage have been heavily hyped as attractive alternatives to in-house application, server and storage networking. But are enterprises truly scrapping their in-house servers and data centers in favor of off-site Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions?
Deduplicating Elsewhere
Deduplication technology discussions usually center on deduplicating the backup target. That makes sense, as this is where the biggest payoff is for the technology. Increasingly, the discussion is moving more to using deduplication as a part of archive disk or primary storage. Deduplication, however, is also branching out beyond standard disk, and there are areas to consider whether applying the technology is worth the investment.
Why RAID 6 stops working in 2019
Three years ago, Robin Harris of ZDNet warned that RAID 5 would stop working in 2009. Sure enough, no enterprise storage vendor now recommends RAID 5. They now recommend RAID 6, which protects against two drive failures. But in 2019 even RAID 6 won’t protect your data. Here’s why.
Fibre Channel over Ethernet to dominate after 2010
Fibre Channel (FC) switch port sales declined for the first time in 2009, and market research firms predict a temporary upswing over the next few years before a permanent decline as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) cuts into FC use.
