Restored protected file system does not use full capacity of the PartitionPrint friendly page

Symptom

After restoring a file system to a partition that was larger than the protected volume, the file system does not appear to utilize the full capacity of the partition.

Cause

The file system is a block level restoration and will use as much space as it consumed on the protected server.  The extended space of the file system will not appear in the available free space.  The partition still holds the total space, although the extended area is not utilized.

Resolution

Microsoft’s DiskPart utility can be used to “extend” the File System so it utilizes the full capacity of the partition.  This can be done through the RRC on the Boot CD for the OS drive since the “extend” command is not possible if it is currently in use for the running operating system.  For more information on DiskPart, please review the article below.
